Seminar: Evaluating the effectiveness of intervention services for rural youth in Liangshan.

International Institute of Social Studies

In this Research in Progress Seminar, Zheng Zhou will talk about her research into the effectiveness of a positive youth development intervention aimed at improving the positive characteristics of adolescents in Liangshan area, China.

Liangshan used to be an area of deep poverty in China. A study adopted a positive youth development intervention to improve the positive characteristics of adolescents in the Liangshan area, adapting the research to the local culture and socio-economic context.

In this Research in Progress Seminar, Zheng Zhou will examine the impact of the intervention on the recipients comprised of Yi minority adolescents. She will describe the evaluation of both the service providers (the university students providing the service) and the service recipients (Yi adolescents).

Her results show that the interventions made significant positive changes in the positive youth development attributes of Yi adolescents. These qualitative evaluation findings were consistent with the quantitative findings which provide evidence supporting the use of positive youth development programmes in nurturing positive development attributes of Yi adolescents in mainland China.
