SEEMS Seminar – Avenues for increasing the impact of behavioral science on climate change mitigation

Om klimaatverandering aan te pakken, zijn binnen korte tijd grote maatschappelijke veranderingen nodig. Inzichten uit de gedragswetenschap kunnen hierbij helpen, maar hebben tot nu toe slechts een beperkte invloed gehad op ­mitigatiestrategieën. Nielsen legt uit waarom klimaatmitigatie meer aandacht verdient vanuit de wetenschap, en op welke gebieden zij het meest effectief kan bijdragen aan beleid. Nielsen sluit af met reflecties over hoe de relevantie van onderzoek voor beleidsmakers en interdisciplinaire samenwerkingen kan worden vergroot.

Abstract

Addressing climate change requires unprecedented societal transformations within a short time frame. Behavioral science has an important role to play, yet so far it has had only a limited influence on mitigation strategies. In this talk, I highlight why behavioral science deserves greater scientific and policy attention, and where it can contribute most effectively. Specifically, I propose ways to three key avenues for research on climate-relevant behavior. I will close with reflections on how to increase the relevance of our research for policymakers and interdisciplinary collaborations.
